  • 3/4 cup whole masoor dal
  • 3/4 cup brown rice
  • 1 onion cut into strips
  • 1 carrot chopped
  • Whole masala like bay leaf black pepper, cloves, cardamom.
  • Handful of nuts like Almonds and Pistachios


  • Soak brown rice in water for around 30 minutes.
  • In a clay pot or a wok, take dal, put water and cook uncovered for 20 to 30 minutes. It should be just done and not mushy. Strain water and keep aside.
  • In another wok, take ghee add whole garam masala, chillies, add onions and carrots and stir for 1 min.
  • Now add brown rice and coat well with masalas.
  • Put cooked dal into rice and add around 1 cup water.
  • Cover and cook till it is done.
  • Garnish with pistachios and almonds.
  • Finish with chopped coriander and caramelized onions.
  • Serve with Raita.
